Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Construction
December 13, 2017
The New Dixie Highway Project construction began Dec. 2017 and will continue through 2019.
Representing a $50 million investment to improve safety, mobility and livability along the corridor, the project will commence in two phases (listed below).
Construction will include the installation of new transit stations for TARC’s Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) line and other streetscape improvements. This may require some bus stops along Dixie Highway to be closed or temporarily relocated affecting Routes #18, #20, #29, and #50X Northbound and Southbound.
The New Dixie Highway Project will include the region’s first bus rapid transit route – a faster, more reliable bus line with state-of-the-art buses and three dozen bus stops and stations. The BRT line will be a new route with strategically located stops along Dixie Highway/18th Street between the Gene Snyder Freeway and Broadway and into the downtown core. Click here for more information on the New Dixie Highway Project.
At higher-volume locations, BRT stations may feature shelters with seating, real-time bus arrival information, trash receptacles and distinctive signage. At lower-volume locations, BRT stops may have signage and benches only.
BRT helps bus riders get to their locations faster and more reliably and will help overall traffic mobility, using technology to help buses load and unload faster and move along the route more swiftly.
“Queue jumps” are one of the technologies that give BRT buses a head start on other vehicles at some intersections. The new BRT buses will also communicate with the new traffic signal systems. Extended green lights, which can be controlled by on-board technology, can keep buses on time and traffic flowing.
As the project progresses, we will continue to work with project managers and construction crews to keep you informed and work with officials to minimize impact and service disruptions.
